New Edition

Just the other night a famished kitten followed my roommate home, entered our house, and has not left since. My two roommates and I have a tendency to take care of passing by animals. Since having moved in, just over a year ago, we have parented three dogs, a rabbit, and now a cat. I suggested we apply for government funding considering the boarding house we have established. Despite added responsibility these animals are plenty entertainment. My first roommate, a sort of Maitre d’ of the house, started this trend when she rescued a now very cute Pomeranian named “Trixie Lady Fox.” My other roommate has since followed suit caring for this very adorable, attention hogging, cat. Surprisingly I have received no feline wounds, as the cat does not seem to scratch. The dog that I was taken care of, known as Garfunkel, alias Oscar, has since been adopted by a Filipino family. Oh ya and the Bunny went back to its owner once she returned from the summer. So this new edition to our L.A. shin digs is working out pretty well, giving our college life a more domestic feel.

Cultural Misunderstanding

Drama
My friend from Mexico City visited me for the weekend in Los Angeles. I was really excited for her to come; I had already visited her three times and stayed with her family. She is a 22-year-old Catholic, attending college, but still living at home. Living at home is customary in Mexico City until you are married. When she finally got to L.A. she called me saying she had checked into a hotel room. Now I thought this was incredibly rude and bizarre considering I had expressed excitement over her staying with me and my roommates, at our cool bungalow house outside downtown L.A. It seemed harsh that she would shoot down my hospitality but either way I got in my car and drove to her hotel to meet her. When I arrived at the hotel she was there with her younger 19-year brother and his friend. It turns out she came with a younger chaperone, her parents did not want her traveling alone, also bizarre to me considering she went to boarding school with me and Cuba this summer. Anyways I thought we could split and her brother would stay with his friend and her with me, it turns out she wanted to spend every minute with the sibling she already lives with! Now I know I have been called fiery independent before but this just sounded plain incestuous. The whole thing gave me a raging headache.

Halloween Dos and Don'ts

Pumpkin Pukes

Although you may be in costume, there are still some limitations. Be sure to make this Halloween a time to remember and not to forget by reviewing this list of dos and don'ts for October 31st.

DO
1. Have an original costume. Don't pay for overpriced costumes online that every other person will sport.
2. Collect candy. Even if you are out just to drink it is not a Halloween without tooth rotting treats.
3. Make plans. Don't just "wing it" in my experience it is better to make plans and have a destination so as not to waste the night with indecision.
4. Take pictures ! Nothing is better than documenting a night where you and all your friends look ridiculous.
5. Consider the weather. I have once been out in a little sailor outfit when it stated to snow.

DON'T
1. Whatever you do don't drive if you have been drinking. Remember there are kids walking around in the dark all night so even if you "think your fine" don't get anywhere near the drivers seat. If your having a house party with alcohol collect peoples keys, besides it makes the party last all night.
2. Don't wear a costume you feel uncomfortable in. You most likely will be moving around a lot on Halloween and nothing is worse then having your costume fall apart on you, or looking self conscious when you should be having a good time.
3. Try not to be a flake, meaning say your going to hang out with some friends and ditch for others.
4. Don't be alone. Especially if you are a girl, or women, make sure you buddy up with someone, Halloween is a hectic time and can get dangerous.
5. Don't ditch Halloween ! Prepare yourself for October 31st and get out of you house, no one wants to be that person passing out candy.

Fall Foliage

covered bridge
I just drove through New England and concluded that Vermont has the best seasons foliage. The Fall colors in Vermont are spectacular, ranging from bright orange and yellows, to softer crimsons, and even a few reluctant green leaves. Not only is it amazing to see but I love the smell of fall in Vermont. The air is crisp and the fallen leaves have a very distinct smell. I spent time in my favorite little town called Woodstock. If you are ever passing through Vermont you should seriously consider making Woodstock a destination. This town is home to some famous covered bridges, farms, as well as colonial architecture. My Aunt was even proposed to on the same bridge 3 times now. There are few places like it, Woodstock remains tucked away and preserved from changing infrastructures, its rustic beauty makes it the definition of idyllic.)

Fixing My Smile

This summer I chipped my tooth playing in a pickup baseball game. I was pissed because I had just finished making my teeth straight by getting invisalign in Beverly Hills. My diet, consisting mainly of cigarettes and coffee, began to rot my chipped tooth making it turn to an unsightly yellow brown color. Living in Los Angeles, where white beaming perfect smiles are as ubiquitous as Starbucks, I became very self-conscious about my tooth. Not sure where to go I asked my doctor for a referral; he told me to look into implant dentistry Beverly Hills. I took his advice and went online to look up “cosmetic dentistry Beverly Hills.” Already I have gotten many complements and dinner dates lined up.
